On Media, Representation & the Future

Representation
Why "Diversity" Isn't Enough — We Need Ownership
Diversity initiatives place us in rooms others built. Ownership means we build the room. At Ova, every decision — from what we greenlight to how we distribute — is made by people who look like our audience. That's not a diversity metric. That's infrastructure.
Streaming
The FAST Channel Revolution — and What It Means for Independent Creators
Free Ad-Supported Television is one of the most important shifts in streaming since Netflix launched. For independent Black and diverse content creators, FAST channels are a legitimate distribution path that didn't exist five years ago. Ova is positioned at the forefront of this movement.
Culture
Preserving the Black Cinema Archive — Before It Disappears
The race films of the 1930s–1950s and the Blaxploitation era of the 1970s represent an irreplaceable window into Black American culture, creativity, and resistance. Ova's classic cinema library isn't nostalgia — it's preservation. These films shaped everything that came after.
Platform Vision

The Ova Roadmap

01
Expand Original Production
Greenlight more Ova Originals — scripted drama, unscripted reality, talk shows, documentaries, and music programming — with an emphasis on creators of color in front of and behind the camera.
02
Grow the Latin Division
Ova Viva is growing. The next phase of the Latin content division includes new original series, expanded partnerships with Latin American production companies, and Spanish-language originals targeting diaspora audiences globally.
03
International Distribution
Taking Ova content beyond U.S. borders — through international licensing, co-production agreements, and new OTT platform partnerships that place Ova stories in front of audiences across the African diaspora worldwide.
04
Creator Pathways & The Ova Network
Building a formal infrastructure for independent creators — pitch submissions, production support, distribution guarantees, and promotion — so that the next generation of Black and Latina storytellers has a defined path to screen.

The Calming Card

No matter who you are, or what you do, there will be times where life can get overwhelming. I created this cheat sheet for myself, to help me find my calm in the midst of my own storm. I hope these help you. — Cassandra Cooper · cass@ovamediagroup.com

Level 1 — Instant Calm (Easiest)
  1. "This too shall pass. I am just having a moment of doubt."
  2. I'm trusting my gut. It's trying to tell me something. Listen.
  3. Those butterflies in your stomach are trying to tell you something.
  4. When I feel anxious about a decision, I remind myself of my why.
  5. Tears are nature's gift to your nervous system. Don't be afraid to cry; let those tears wash away the angst and pain disturbing your peace. Let it go.
  6. Self-doubt and failure are normal occurrences. It's okay to have those moments — cry, pray, meditate.
  7. Look in the mirror daily and tell yourself how beautiful, smart, and amazing you are.
  8. Tell yourself how much you love yourself. This is harder than it seems, but it changes everything.
Level 2 — Grounding + Self-Awareness
  1. Discover your why. Disruption means you are going down an uncharted path. Know your why so you can stay on purpose.
  2. Don't ask for permission to be who you are meant to be. Do you. Are you a leader or a follower?
  3. Doing something that's never been done before takes willpower.
  4. Be your own advocate and cheerleader. Many friends and family lack vision — it's not personal.
  5. Look at your friends. Make a list and ask yourself what they bring to your life.
  6. What do you do in your free time that sharpens your skills?
Level 3 — Empowerment + Action
  1. Wear the feeling of success. Go test-drive the car, tour the house, feel your future. Let that feeling motivate you.
  2. Best advice from a mentor: pitch your project like an entitled white man — fearless, deserving, asking for the outrageous with full intention of being told YES. Have the 'virtual balls.'
  3. Vision board: choose deeply specific items — the house address, the exact car, soulmate qualities, the full package.
  4. The HOW is none of your business. State your vision and let the universe deliver. When it happens, it will feel like déjà vu.
  5. Thank the universe daily for putting you exactly where you are and using you to change the world.
Level 4 — Self-Love + Identity Transformation
  1. Love the skin you're in. You are unique. Honor your uniqueness and take care of your temple.
  2. No perfect weight — just the best version of you. If you feel unhealthy, find YOUR regimen. Follow instinct, not a scale.
  3. Stand in the mirror and admire your badassery — you must be your own cheerleader. No one else can make you feel great about yourself.
  4. Help your mind/body connection align. No one else can do that work for you.
Level 5 — Life Purpose + Destiny Work (Hardest)
  1. Create your life mission statement:
    • List your talents, skills, desires.
    • Describe your perfect world.
    • Don't judge yourself.
    • Write it with pen or pencil — it makes it real.
    • Review and revise often.
    • Keep it private; this is between you and destiny.
